Christian Hope
This painting is another of the most notable paintings in the St. James collection. Created by Oertel in 1868, this is a painting in which Christian Hope is personified as a beautiful woman. The woman's face gazes into the clear sky above her while a parting storm is shown behind her and in the lower left corner. The white robe suggests righteousness, and she bears a red mantle of Joy clasped with a golden anchor. A Jet Cross is suspended below the golden anchor. The painting includes much religious symbolism.
