Lament of the Fallen Spirits was the first major painting that Oertel made in the United States. Oertel made this early painting sometime between 1850 and 1852. The inspiration came from John Milton's “Paradise Lost,” specifically lines that refer to fallen angels that sing in astounding harmony. Overall, it is a strange and original composition that displays much creativity.
